Meet Maroussia
HAC Member Since 2001
My name is Maroussia Reid and my story is more one of success on the inside rather than the outside. At 7 months of age, I was diagnosed with a severe heart defect and given one year to live. My parents flew me to every possible place to get help and I ended up in Canada at the Montreal children’s hospital. They performed a temporary surgery but I was still expected only to live to the age of 12. The years passed and I survived longer than expected until at the age of twenty five, I started to have severe breathing problems.
I was referred to one of the best heart specialist in the Caribbean who was based in Miami. He told me I needed surgery right away. With all the advances in technology, he told me they would be able to correct the problem. After the surgery, I no longer had breathing problems and even better than that, I was told I could have children.
At that point in time, I realized the importance of taking care of my inside. My heart became a top priority to me and I started exercising on a daily basis and eat as healthily as possible. Fifteen years later, I still follow my strict regime of diet and exercise and every time I go for my annual check up, the doctor is thrilled with the shape of my heart.
The Health and Athletic Center has helped me to keep up my exercise regime. I drop the kids off at school in the morning and I do step, cycle, yoga, and bosu aerobic classes plus lift weights. Exercising has become a regular part of my life. I often tell people it’s like having a daily bath…..if I don’t do it, I don’t feel good.
